A NICE POST-CIVIL WAR ERA ROMANCE

As the civil war has recently ended, there is much damage left behind, and much repair to be done. Further, somebody needs to be held responsible. Zach Saberton, youngest of the 3 brothers has been declared dead in an effort to avoid having blame pinned on him as a major contributor to the South’s war efforts. Aurora, his young betrothed, while grieving, has not lost all hope. Eventually, it is proven Zach is alive, but to gain his freedom he must help the new government gain lost gold that has found its way to England.
Aurora won’t be left behind to worry and grieve any longer, and follows Zach headlong into danger. Zach is continually thinking on his feet, worrying about his countrymen, and especially Aurora as well as their future.

The story gains speed about halfway through and the Pinkerton addition was especially intriguing.

I appreciated the historical notes at the end and the sweet tuck-ins included in the package.

My Review: ***VERY EXCITING, EDGE OF THE SEAT READ***

Floatsam: any goods floating on the sea where a ship has sunk or been cast away

Jetsam: Anything purposely cast out of a ship when in danger, in hopes of saving it, or at least lightening the load.

1813, N. Cornwall, England - "Sometimes I wonder how I ended up here in Cornwall, so far from my childhood home. I feel like a castaway, set adrift on the tide by the long-ago deaths of my parents, and left wanting answers.  Is there a plan in all this?  Does God truly hold my fate in His hands, or has my life all been happenstance, the mysterious ebb and flow of chance?" Laura spends her days rescuing things from the sea, and trying to return them where they belong.  Only now, she's rescuing a man. 

Alexander is trying to get home to his father and brother before it's too late.  But there is a war on and he has a past they may yet catch up to him, interfering with his goal. "He did believe the Almighty heard his prayers, although God had not promised he would not suffer. I enjoyed learning about the hurdy-gurdy.  If you look it up on Wikipedia you can actually hear a sample.  I also loved how Jago called her Our Laura, just like in the BBC series, Lark Rise to Candleford.

Tea Moment: Laura rose and put the kettle on.  A few minutes later, refreshed by tea and shared cake, Laura urged, "One more?" Mary smiled. "What shall it be this time? Smuggler? Pirates? Shipwrecks?" Laura nodded. "Yes please. All three." Outside the wind continued to rise, and Mary began another story.

Very Good. Regina Jennings never disappoints. A sweet story of the young man who pined and hoped for a girl, left, got his start in the world, but never forgot her. Despite their rocky past, he set his heart on one day returning to her. After a disaster changed her future forever she was thankful Adam had left & she managed to find a job that fulfilled her. Now he's back and chaos and confusion have come with him.
I liked their innocence and also Adam's strength. He is determined to prove himself to the community and to Bella. I appreciated the faith element in the story.

Very sweet story. Barnabas & Phoebe are forced to work together to make Phoebe's dream successful. She's romantic to a fault and he is equally practical. And therein lies the balance they both need. The Kissing Tree has grown in local charm & magic and is beautifully captured in a very special portrait I could easily picture. ❤🌳❤
Quotable: "Perhaps this Inn of Smooching Shrubbery wouldn’t be the disaster he’d imagined."

TEA CONUNDRUM

It's Saturday.  This morning has been slightly overcast & the squirrels are chasing each other up and down the trees outside my open windows. Ahhhh, bliss.  It must be time for tea!

Yesterday I was at the .99¢ Only Store (a name that mocks me regularly since they have changed their prices) (& FYI, if you want to type the ¢ sign - hold down the Alt button while you type 155 😁).  I happened to spot two well-known name brand teas; Pukka and Tazo.  I thought the Apricot Vanilla Creme white tea by Tazo looked interesting, so that's what I brewed this morning.  I will preface this by saying I am HYPER-sensitive to smells and tastes.  I brewed the tea as directed (about 3 minutes) and added honey.  As I brought it up to sip, I noticed an odd dirty smell.  I sipped anyhow and the taste was gentle and sweet, really quite pleasant. But, every time I lifted the cup the smell assaulted my nostrils.  I tried to puzzle this out.  Could it be my cup for some reason?  I tried another and even a new tea bag, but the problem remained.  I checked the expiration date = Nov. 2021.  Well, this is quite the conundrum and perhaps someone out there has had a similar experience or thoughts.  Anyhow, I brewed something else and will share this tea with my daycare Littles and other tea lovers and see what they think.

***MOST ENJOYABLE, CLEAN, REGENCY ERA STORY***

I started reading mid-day and read until bedtime.  Finished in one sitting!  The idea of the 2 main characters helping each other find a good match is always interesting. I really like the brothers Aaron and Lord Rigsby. Both are supporting characters. They need to work out their issues & have stories of their own.  When old characters show up, particularly from Kristi's books, it's especially amusing. The verbal sparring in conversations is witty and adds to the reading. I appreciate that eventually Hudson asks to court Bianca properly and get to know each other better vs simply rushing into marriage.

"finally - he was going to step into the life he'd been waiting twenty-eight years to live. As the firstborn son of the firstborn son of the sixth Viscount Stildon, Hudson had always known his destiny. Assuming, of course, that he managed to stay alive and fulfill it.  Hiding away in India had been enough to protect Hudson from the schemes of a crazed uncle who wanted the title for himself, but it had meant exposure to other dangers."

"Something about him struck her as photographic, as if he were already a still life captured on film. What would he look like when actually put to paper? Would the camera see the same thing her eyes did, or would it not translate into a photograph, where everything was caught in a moment devoid of motion? No. She'd learned to capture motion - or its story, anyway - with her camera. She would just have to see if she could capture its opposite too. A challenge she'd never taken up before, but one she was determined to meet.

This story is chock full of information & wonderful detail.  I loved how it was woven through the tense war years, the 1918 flu epidemic, and the faith of believers vs the righteousness of non-believers.  I also found it precious that people brought together during those difficult days could still find love, clinging to one another for support.  I was NOT prepared for the part of the story that brought me to sobbing tears.  It was very emotional and definitely required pause and tissues.  Very well written and highly recommended.
