IDEAS WHILE KIDS STAY HOME FROM SCHOOL

A mom asked me for ideas, so I thought I would share with others who might benefit too! Feel free to share.
Tuesday is St. Patrick's Day - you can have fun focusing on this holiday with your Littles AND what the heck, celebrate ALL week!
FOODS: Oatmeal with St. Patrick's day sprinkles, green pancakes (even for dinner!), cupcakes with green frosting, etc. I am not a corned beef and cabbage kind of girl, but Irish stew is a warming idea this week! Irish Breakfast flavored tea is definitely on MY list, but it is usually caffeinated so you'll probably want alternatives for the Littles. I normally do Lime Sherbet Floats this time of year, but I think this week is a bit cold here in SoCal - so I'll tuck that one away for next year.
Hunt for clovers in the yard or on a walk. Make fingerprint clovers with a green stamp pad, perhaps even on homemade cards they can mail. If you want to learn how to mail a card for just .2¢ ask me!
Have the whole family WEAR GREEN and then take family pictures. (Our school was supposed to have Spring photos on Tuesday... do it at home or in the neighborhood by some flowers).
Put green ribbons/bows on PETS for photos with them!
Take 1 on 1 PICTURES- this one has become super important to me since my dad recently passed! Some photos were easy to find for my dad's memorial, while others were particularly hard. For example, those family members who would rather take photos than be in them were few and far between & even harder to find them IN a photo WITH my dad. Don't let that happen to you.

I love the idea of more FAMILY DEVOTIONS while the kids are out of school. These videos are fun & I, my kids & previous daycare Littles have benefited from a few of them in the past. TwistyNoodle dot com has lots of free worksheets and coloring pages & they usually pop up around whatever holiday is most current. So it should open with several St. Patrick's themes. I love that they let you change/personalize the headers and even change from printing to cursive. (For example, I did a search for monsters and changed the header to read 'Wash Away Germs'). You will want to keep those kids' brains working while school is closed. Let them know homeschool is now in session! 

Make OLDER KIDS 'the teacher'. They tend to be a little more invested and interested when they think they are in charge (reading a book to younger siblings, building a fort and choosing the next Bible story to read inside it, sending them outside to lead a gathering expedition (leaves, bugs, flowers, etc.), organizing a picnic, etc.

TALK with your kids regularly about the Coronavirus to ensure they are not afraid. I have already heard how one teacher in our district went a bit over the top sharing with (scaring) her students. Let kids ask questions and lead the conversations. Put them in charge of reminding other family members to wash hands (singing the ABCs) so they feel like they are a part of the solution. Take some pictures they have colored or some baked goods to elderly neighbors (so you can check and make sure they are ok too). Add your phone number so they know they can call you if necessary. Offer to pray with them if you feel comfortable or have your kids pray for them after you leave to encourage their prayer 'muscles'. There are so many great teachable moments in all of this if you look for them (raise your hand if you're excited!).
Above all - PRAY with your kids and remind them God is in control. Today (Sunday, 3/15/20) is a Natl. Day of Prayer but really every day is - right?!

St. Patrick's Day



"People said I was too broken, but God

Patrick was born in 389AD, in Britain. He became
a slave in Ireland when he was kidnapped @ age 16.
He gave his heart to Christ around 22. Later, he
escaped to a monastery in France. At age 40, God
gave him an intense dream that led him back to
Ireland to share the salvation message during a
very dangerous time. He felt completely inadequate
to preach & used many illustrations: the most
remembered, of course, is the SHAMROCK whose
3 leaves illustrate the holy trinity: God the Father,
Jesus the Son, The Holy Spirit - 3 in 1.
Patrick died March 17, 461.

FROM IRELAND

This lovely cup I ordered arrived in the post yesterday, just in time.  

It was crafted in Ireland, which makes it all the more special in terms of my Irish heritage.

While photographing it, I caught this lovely little guy working hard!


My local Sprouts market sells Irish Soda Bread filled with raisins and covered in sparkling sugar, along with Kerry Gold Irish butter.  It is a fun tradition to enjoy in March, along with a good cup of tea!

I always enjoy watching the movie Leap Year around this time.

 It is such a favorite with beautiful Irish countryside and ear tickling accents. It stars Matthew Goode and Amy Adams.

 What I love is how like many of us, Anna has taken full charge of her life and made many plans.  But, (and even though He is not portrayed - this is my interpretation), God has other plans.  Better plans.   

 Declan (owner of an Irish pub/inn) has been burned by love and is in no way, looking for it again, any time soon. He needs money to save his business, and agrees to take Anna to Dublin (so she can propose on Leap Day to her boyfriend of 4 years).  

 The two main characters do not "have relations", for a refreshing change.   One of my favorite scenes is when they stay in Tipperary at a lovely little cottage of a B&B.  They pick farm produce and open up to each other, and cook together.  It is quite precious.
Sorry this is grainy; it is the only internet photo I could find of the scene.

 She is shown the possibilities, but never forced to accept them.  I relate this to having a personal relationship with Christ.  In the end, it is her choice, just as it is our choice.

 For the most part, this is a wonderful adventure of a romantic movie and I highly recommend you give it a chance.  (I have seen it for sale every year at WalMart during the month of March for cheap-cheap!).

Calendar ReDo

Sometimes, I find a calendar I really like...except for a few shortcomings (in my opinion). 
This month's page features coffee.  I truly loathe coffee, so I decided to make a few changes.

I colored in all of the coffee beans with a brown sharpie.
I added  clover stickers over the coffee beans on the pitcher/vase.
I glued on a Twinings Irish Breakfast tea tag cascading down the cup.
And I changed the quote, that did not suit my taste to the fun following one featuring tea:


You're American, ain't you? ...I've 'eard as 'ow they don't drink tea. Dunno 'ow they get through the day. Time was when I could 'ave a nice cuppa with me mates, the rest 'o the cleaners, sit in comfort in a room they give us, put me feet up and 'ave a bit of a gossip. Now I keeps me tea things in the broom cupboard and 'as to make do with sittin' on the stairs by me lonesome, but still, tea's tea.
